Grain size characterization in metallic alloys using different microscopy and post-processing techniques

In this work, an image analysis procedure which enables estimation of grain size distribution from optical and scanning electron micrographs is detailed. Two applicative cases (a face centered cubic austenitic stainless steel a hexagonal close packed zirconium alloy, both with fully recrystallized equiaxed microstructure) are considered. Grain definition discussed in terms mean distribution. Classical methodologies as well standardized definitions recalled compared to each other. Results obtained by backscattered diffraction the ones after based on or micrographs. The effect data processing parameters results also examined. Image proves be suitable obtain accurate information shorter acquisition times EBSD orientation mapping same analyzed area.
